Blue Hour is the BEST best time for film photography

Hey there my friend, Today I want to share with you a recent photo walk I did during film photography’s least appreciated times of day.

Blue Hour.

Golden hour's less-appreciated, but equally beautiful cousin.

That prime moment of time just before sunrise and right after sunset, when the sky puts on its best denim jeans and the world gets cloaked in shades of moody blues.

And unlike Golden Hour where everyone is out there fighting for position to capture the same old sunset.

Blue Hour is a ghost town. Quiet. Peaceful. And where serious photographers can get some of their best work done while the world's Instagrammers sleep, unaware of the magic they're missing.

Plus, Blue Hour comes with the added benefit of transitioning directly into sunrise, or directly after a sunset, and is neighbors with Golden Hour, allowing you to capture 3 of the most highly sought after lighting conditions all in the span of just a couple hours.

Now traditionally when it comes to low light photography, night photography, and things like that,

Especially where gas stations are involved.

Many film photographers reach for Cinestill 800T, known for its halation effect or as I like to call it, fuzzy red balls, that creates a kind of “glow” in the strong highlights on some images.

But there’s another kid in town that you want to pay attention to: Kodak Portra 800.

A reliable and versatile film stock that you can count on when the going gets rough. Above all though, it works in just an absurdly large number of different situations and scenarios as we’ll see shortly.

So with that said let’s begin our blue hour photo adventure as the clock is ticking before the sun rises and ruins our chances of achieving those blue undertones that would make even a Smurf blush.
