This is a wooden stein project, sometimes called a mug or a tankard. The wood used is oak and the barrel consists of 12 staves (or slats), the inside is a double walled stainless tumbler making the stein fully functional and safe, there’s circular bottom and lid parts, and a latch part that attaches to the stein’s handle. The lid assembly rotates slightly less than 90 degrees around a dowel, this makes it naturally want to be in the closed position. Some say the lid feature was added to steins to keep beer safe during the black plague in Europe during the middle ages.
In additional to everything being glued together, there’s also black nylon twine wrapping that is decorative and will help strengthen the staves. The finish is food grade wood conditioner consisting of bees wax, mineral oil, and carnauba wax.
The video also shows the detailed steps of how the wooden stein was made.
Google Sketchup CAD tool was used for the upfront design. There is a dimensioned 3D CAD model is available if interested for this project. To get it go to Sketchup's 3D warehouse at the below link then type in either "Wooden Stein / Mug" or "Dumas5000" in the search box.
