GWM Cannon 2025 review: Updated Chinese ute gets larger diesel engine and increased towing capacity

The now renamed 2025 GWM Cannon is firing its shot at Australia's mid-size ute segment, with the midlife facelift of the first-generation model – previously known simply as Ute – ushering in significant upgrades to both its engine and braked towing capacity, as well as a host of smaller changes that the Chinese brand is hoping adds up to undeniable appeal.

So, what has changed with the Cannon specifically? Well, it's now powered by a 135kW/480Nm (+15kW/80Nm) 2.4-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine that's been taken from its Cannon Alpha big brother, which also donates its nine-speed torque-converter automatic transmission. This combination helps to enabled a 3500kg (+300kg) braked towing capacity, which matches the segment benchmark.
