British Mixed Spice is a classic blend of warm, aromatic spices used primarily in traditional British baking. This mix, sometimes called "pudding spice," adds a sweet, spiced depth to cakes, puddings, and baked goods. It’s reminiscent of autumn and winter flavours, though it can be used year-round to infuse a warm, fragrant note into desserts.
Cinnamon is the dominant spice in this blend. It is sweet and warm, with a comforting flavour that works beautifully in cakes and desserts.
Ground Coriander. Often used more for its subtle citrus-like, earthy undertone, coriander adds complexity to the blend and balances the sweetness of the other spices.
Ground Allspice. This spice offers a mixture of flavours, including cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, enhancing the warmth and spice of the mix.
Nutmeg is sweet, nutty, and slightly peppery, providing depth and a warm, aromatic richness.
Ground Cloves. Strong and intense, cloves bring a sharp, spicy warmth that complements the sweetness of the other spices.
Ground Ginger. Known for its slightly spicy, peppery heat with a touch of sweetness, ginger adds a subtle kick to the blend.
Mace is the outer coating of the nutmeg seed. Its flavour is similar to nutmeg but more delicate and slightly more intense. It adds a warm, sweet-spicy flavour.
Uses for British Mixed Spice:
Spiced Cakes: Traditionally used in fruit cakes, sponge cakes, and other sweet bakes, this blend is perfect for classics like Christmas cake, carrot cake, and spiced loaves.
Puddings: It’s a key ingredient in Christmas pudding and other steamed desserts, adding rich warmth to the dish.
Pastries and Pies: This blend can be sprinkled into pie fillings, especially those with fruits like apple or pear, or mixed into the pastry dough for extra flavour.
Breads and Scones: Great for adding a spicy note to hot cross buns, gingerbread, or spiced fruit scones.
Crumble Toppings: It can be added to oat and flour crumbles for a fragrant, spicy twist.
Cookies and Biscuits: Often used in spiced gingerbread cookies or shortbread to create a warming flavour.
This versatile blend adds a distinctive, warm, aromatic depth to any dish where sweet spices are needed. It’s especially popular around the holidays but can bring a cosy, spiced note to your baking.
