Excerpts from four performances of a beloved 20th-century concerto featuring a rising generation of violinists playing renowned Italian instruments. Performers include Guro Kleven Hagen (1735 Bergonzi) with the Oslo Philharmonic under Vasily Petrenko; Stella Chen (1709 Stradivarius) with the Belgian National Orchestra under Antony Hermus; William Hagen (1735 Guarneri) with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony under Christoph Eschenbach; Stefan Jackiw (1704 Ruggieri) with the Spanish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Carlos Kalmar. As of this writing, Mr. Jackiw has moved on to a Guadagnini violin, and some of the other performers may also be playing different instruments.
It's difficult to rank great violins. Studies indicate that even professionals have difficulty differentiating 18th-century violins by their sound alone--and some even prefer the sound of new violins! Then there's engineering: even the best microphones can't duplicate what a live audience hears in a concert hall.
Still, the quality of the performers shines through clearly in these recordings, regardless of the instrument they're using. Each of the performances is gorgeous, and all are available on YouTube as of this writing.
