In this video, Leila Pereira discusses how a 2013 Brazilian law—known as the “good faith” principle—unintentionally triggered a surge in illegal gold mining across the Amazon. By removing buyers’ responsibility to verify the origin of gold, the law created incentives for the trade of illegal gold, leading to higher deforestation and a dramatic rise in local violence.
