Riding through 5th Ave Projects “Riverside Terrace” (Plesinger place) Housing Authority buildings before demolition.
Israel Roizman, the private developer working on the new $106 million project with the Paterson Housing Authority, said he expects the first phase of apartments to open next spring and the entire complex of 246 units to be done by June 2022.
There will be 81 apartments in the senior citizen section and 165 family units, officials said.
Twice before in the 21st century, Gorham’s agency has overseen the demolition of housing projects that were notorious for crime and violence: the buildings on Alabama Avenue near Route 80 and the Christopher Columbus complex on the north side of the Passaic River. In both instances, the new housing developments at those sites have avoided the problems that plagued their predecessors.
Gorham attributed the change to the “community spirit” that comes with new buildings. Several tenants said they believe that troublemakers were barred from returning to the rebuilt complexes.
Paterson Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale said he “absolutely” expects a similar transformation at the Riverside location, a place where out-of-town residents made purchases in open-air drug markets just a few years ago.
“It is a victory for our city,” Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh said of the new projects
