A Cold Spring Night in the Newfoundland Bush with Dogs

This is overnight trip I made in mid April 2018, with my Cape Shore Water Dog, Saku and Husky, Bear. I cross country ski into the woods of central Newfoundland, Canada and get up close and personal with ripping wind and cold spring weather.
I underline how simple it is to spend a night out and that you do not need the best skills or gear to do so.
Other than my low end cross country skis (snowshoeing is another option), sled($90) and essential wool base layers ($220 although you can get a sufficient set for under $100), the rest of my kit for this trip was relatively cheap. Including arguably the three most important items, my one person tent ($20 Canadian Tire), minus 17 comfort rated sleeping bag ($130 Canadian Tire) and Thermarest RidgeRest sleeping pad ($40 MEC).
For a cold weather trip like this those three items only cost a total of $190. In comparison, I have a RAB winter sleeping bag that cost $400 and a MSR Hubba Hubba NX two person tent that cost $500. Note: wool socks that your nan can knit you and a toque are also essential for sleeping in the cold conditions.
All said and done, it can be very comfortable and enjoyable in the woods, no matter the weather, without breaking the bank. By pushing yourself a little outside your comfort zone you will learn as you go and even get a well deserved break from the demands of our modern lives. A break that in my opinion, nothing else can compare to. I think many others would agree.
Just make sure that if you do decide to venture out in colder weather, that you have sufficient protection from the elements. Keep in mind that it's never a bad idea to try these types of experiences in your own backyard or close to home at first. Then you'll know if you are well enough equipped.
Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoy the show.
