Should British Steel be renationalised? That was just one of the questions answered by business leader, philanthropist and Phones 4U founder John Caudwell in his Sky News sit-down interview with Ali Fortescue for the Politics Hub programme.
Caudwell said: "Selling off our infrastructure to especially the Chinese is not a good idea. And, of course in the case of steel, with Putin's invasion of Ukraine, we cannot afford not to have a steel industry because we may have to go into really substantial armament production in the future. And we'll need steel as our own internal resource not provided by some other nation that may or may not provide it."
He added: "We should be a free trading nation. But we don't want the Chinese or any other nation to overtake our infrastructure, especially that that might be critical to the future."
In a busy week for political and economic news, Caudwell also discussed Trump tariffs, Vice-President JD Vance's comments about a potential US-UK trade deal, the Conservatives' electoral prospects and his feelings about the Labour Party ten months after endorsing them at the General Election, as well as why more billionaires should join the Giving Pledge.
