In this episode we take our finished base shoe and build fully 3D cording on top of it – ready for texturing, rendering, and marketing.
We start by bringing the shoe from Rhino into Modo and then:
Draw clean, controllable cord paths over the upper using constrained curves
Shape the path so it actually makes sense for real-world lacing and support
Convert the curves into 3D cords using a mesh operator setup (curve → section → curve extruder)
Sculpt the cords with Brush Move and soft selection so they bend and sit believably around the shoe
Fix intersections and tangles so it feels like real rope wrapping around the upper
Then we prep the cords for texturing:
Do quick, clean UV unwrapping on the cord loops
Pack UVs consistently so repeating rope/cord textures will look right in any render engine
Export everything back to Rhino as SubD so you can easily use it in other software or send to print
By the end of this video you have:
A finished shoe with layered cording systems
UV’d geometry ready for textures, renders, and AI overpaints
A reusable workflow you can repeat on any shoe you design
