Sulphur Crested Cockatoo is one of the most popular and iconic birds in Australia.
They can live up to eighty years in captivity.
Being a large white parrot, with a dark grey-black bill, a distinctive sulphur-yellow crest and yellow wash on the underside of its wings.
The Sulphur Crested Cockatoo can be found throughout the northern and eastern mainland of Australia and Tasmania. There is also a small population around Perth. These species are also found in New Guinea and Aru Islands, they are also been introduce into New Zealand and Indonesia
Sulphur Crested Cockatoo are found in a variety of timbered habitats and urban areas. The birds usually stay in the same area all year round.
They usually feed on veriest berries, seeds, nuts and roots.
Their call is a distinctive loud screech, ending with a light upward inflection.
Though the male and females do look similar, the females do have red-brown eyes and males a darker brown eye.
Their eggs are laid in suitable hollow trees which are prepared by both parents. Both birds incubate and care for the chicks. The chicks remain with their parents all year round and family groups stay together indefinitely.
