Dr Paul Rimmer:
"I will talk about the implications of phosphine (PH3) in the clouds of Venus, focusing on the photochemistry. I will briefly discuss the detection of the PH3 1-0 transition and the process of ruling out alternative explanations for the observed feature. I will then talk about how destructive photochemistry of PH3 constrains its lifetime, and provides the test any proposed mechanism must pass in order to explain the observed concentrations of PH3 in the atmosphere. I will discuss some of the mechanisms that produce PH3 and show that they are insufficient to explain the observations. I will briefly discuss the possibility of and challenges faced by microbial life in the clouds of Venus.
Jane Greaves, the discoverer of PH3 in Venus’s atmosphere, will give a talk later in the year about the detection itself. I encourage observers to ask me questions about the observations, which I will pass on to Jane, so that she is prepared to address them during her talk."
