About the Chelyabinsk Meteor

The Chelyabinsk meteor was a superbolide that entered Earth's atmosphere on February 15, 2013, over Chelyabinsk, Russia. It was the largest known meteor to impact Earth's atmosphere since the Tunguska event in 1908. The meteor was estimated to be about 20 meters (66 feet) in diameter and had a mass of approximately 12,000–13,000 metric tons. Traveling at a speed of around 19 km/s (42,500 mph), it created a massive explosion upon entering the atmosphere.

The meteor exploded at an altitude of about 29.7 km (18.4 miles), releasing energy equivalent to 400–500 kilotons of TNT, making it 26–33 times more powerful than the Hiroshima atomic bomb. The shockwave from the explosion shattered windows in over 7,000 buildings, causing injuries to approximately 1,500 people, mostly due to broken glass. The largest recovered fragment, weighing 654 kg (1,442 lbs), was found in Lake Chebarkul.

This event provided valuable data on asteroid impact risks and highlighted the need for improved tracking of near-Earth objects (NEOs). The Chelyabinsk meteor caused widespread damage, thankfully it resulted in no fatalities.
