Designing a Writer’s Garage | Turning Storage into a Space for Focus

Garages were designed for cars.
But in more walkable places, that assumption doesn’t always hold anymore.
Over time, the garage often becomes a place for storage, a space for things we don’t need every day, or don’t quite know what to do with. In this project, I wanted to ask a different question: what if the garage supported something intentional instead?
This video walks through the design of a writer’s garage, a focused workspace shaped by limitation rather than flexibility. The process moves from sketching and modeling through material decisions and a final walkthrough, with special attention to thresholds, restraint, and removing distractions rather than adding features.
The design avoids outward views, secondary screens, and unnecessary furniture. Instead, it centers on a single desk, seating, a hidden bookshelf wall, deep colors, softened lighting, and plants used sparingly to soften the space without pulling attention away from the work.
This is less about optimization, and more about purpose. Reclaiming leftover space and giving it a clear role.
Thanks for spending some time here.
