Title:
The hippocampus as the brain's wave machine.
Abstract:
Cortico-hippocampal interactions are central to cognition and disrupted in neurological disorders, yet their underlying dynamics remain unclear. We model the cortex and hippocampus as coupled neural fields, incorporating realistic wave propagation, geometry and connectivity. While each system alone exhibits canonical rhythms (theta, alpha, beta), their integration drives the network toward a critical state, triggering emergent transitions and frequency mixing across spatial scales. This coupling may explain the hippocampus's involvement in seizures—a prediction supported by intracranial EEG data from epilepsy patients. Our framework offers new insights into cortico-hippocampal dynamics and provides a basis for modeling broader cortical-subcortical interactions.
