The Lasting Wound of Industrial Whaling | Science in Antarctica

In the age of industrial whaling, we killed more than 1.5 million great whales in the Southern Ocean, equivalent to half of the human population of Earth. Even 40 years after the end of whaling, the effects of this slaughter continue to shape the productivity of the Southern Ocean, with effects not just on these ecosystems, but on the global ocean and climate system as well.
However, even facing the disastrous impacts of climate change, we now have the knowledge and ability to act, and if we do, we can still bring about a better future for whales, the oceans, and ourselves.

Science in Antarctica:
In the depths of the Southern Ocean and on the unimaginable expanses of Antarctic ice, stories are playing out right now that will determine the very future of our planet and civilization. Many of these stories are hard to hear, and harder to fathom. But hear them we must, and there are only a few people who can tell these stories true – the scientists who have devoted their lives to understanding the ice and winds, the ocean currents, whales, phytoplankton, krill, birds and the web of interconnections that tie them all together.

Science in Antarctica is a compendium of stories, critical to understanding not just the fate of the Great Southern Continent, but our own fate, and what we must do as a global society to adapt to the fast-coming changes.
