Caimans are a subfamily of alligators and belong to the biological order of Crocodilians. They are found exclusively in South and Central America and are divided into three genera, all three of which are represented in Perú.
In this short documentary, we follow Hallie Cowan Barrera and Chris Ketola from the conservation organization Fauna Forever on their caiman studies on the Río Tambopata in south-eastern Perú.
Not only do we learn more about the implementation and objectives of caiman surveys, but we also discover the value of caimans as bioindicators of an entire ecosystem - an ecosystem that is directly threatened by intensive gold mining and the mass use of highly toxic mercury whose poisoning no longer only affects wildlife.
