'NINA' used to be used after the immigration of Irish and Scottish from the potato famine fallout. It was an acronym used to let society know tha No Irish Need Apply(NINA). This was a social prejudice used to keep Irish & Scottish men from taking good jobs and instead, forcing them to take on the riskier and filthier roles in the workforce....such as Police and Firefighting.
The result is a strong line of Irish and Scottish firefighters who have died in the service of their new country of residence.
Deaths brought funerals and mourning at funerals was always accompanied with the playing of Bagpipes.
The powerful and emotion invoking skirl of this migrant instrument to North America, was soon adopted by many non-migrants for the funerals of their loved ones. We owe a thank you to the brave and intensely emotionally-free Irish folk for sharing their path to emotional expression through the piercing skrill of the Bagpipes:(
