In January 1945, Sergeant Harold Keller of the 87th Infantry designed a crude “farm-style” cable snare using a logging chain, oak stakes, and a salvaged winch. Tank crews mocked him, convinced no rope could stop steel. When a Panther tank rolled over it near Tillet, Belgium, the tensioned cable ripped its tracks apart like paper, freezing it in the kill zone for bazooka teams to finish. The Germans later wrote in reports about a “hidden steel whip.”
