From a reel of Super 8mm film capturing a California trip in 1964, I’ve pieced together scenes from Mendocino, Ukiah, Cloverdale, Sonoma, Napa, Humboldt, Malibu, and Mission Hills. The footage includes places like Keystone Ranch, the Purity store, the Ukiah Masonic Temple, the Eel River, Lake Mendocino, and Lake Comanche. These films were among my granduncle’s belongings after he passed away. I recognize his wife in only a handful of frames, and he doesn’t appear in any of them. I’m unsure who the other people are or how they were connected to him, or why he traveled from his home in Sparks, Nevada, to visit them. Some may have been friends from his Navy service during World War II—he served aboard the USS Cherokee—or from his years working as an electrician at the Naval Shipyard in San Francisco.
After sharing the video in a Facebook group for Ukiah residents, several people were identified: Robert “Bob” Stambaugh, Albert Stambaugh, Barbara Stambaugh Thurston, Herbert Raymond Bray, and Vivian Barbara Bray. My grandaunt, Mary Francis Matthews (originally from Arkansas), also appears, though my granduncle—Maurice “Mac” McDonald of Alabama—is not shown in the film.
