In 1966, the great composer, band leader and pianist Duke Ellington was given an honorary degree from the College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California. After that event, Mr. Ellington attended a gathering in Lafayette, California at the house of Harry Jackson, who was the president of the board of trustees for the college. At that gathering was an English college professor S.I. Hayakawa, a devoted jazz fan. He did not know Duke Ellington but he engaged him in a discussion that was recorded by Rich Jackson, Harry's son. We want to thank Rich for making this interview available.
(A side note: S.I. Hayakawa later became the president of San Francisco State College and and after that, for a time, a Republican US Senator representing California. (Note: In the introduction and outro to this interview, the incorrect date of 1965 was given. The interview actually took place in 1966).
