Ah, the Consolation that we all know and love - thanks to Horowitz, of course!
This was the first Consolation I ever learned. It takes me back ten years, to a time in my life when I was insecure and worked so hard to please other that it became a fault. This was a time when I took my teachers' words as an ultimate truth. I was desperately tuned into other's reactions to my playing.
One memory of this Consolation stands out in my mind. I was trying out the piano for a recital in Como, Italy back in 2011. There were other pianists in the audience as this was part of a master class, and when I had finished playing, no one clapped. I remember looking out into the faces of my peers and seeing...nothing. I was so disheartened. I assumed that I didn't play well. Retrospectively, these young pianists were probably exhausted and involved in worries of their own - how they played earlier that day, the advice they received from public lessons, etc.
I thank God that today I can play this piece with a smile on my face. I am grateful that playing it gives me the sense of peace that so clearly inspired Liszt when he composed it. And, most importantly, I am grateful to share this piece with you, dear listener.
