A short distance away, Gollum crouches like a hunger given shape. His pale eyes fix on Frodo’s clenched hand. His lips move soundlessly at first, then the whisper grows teeth: “We wants it, we needs it. Must have the Precious.”

The whisper sharpens into accusation, a hiss of old possession: “They stole it from us… Sneaky little hobbitses. Wicked, tricksy, false!”

Then the voice changes—softens, flinches, argues back. Sméagol turns his head as if another face waits in the dark and pleads, “No! No! Master!”

But the harsher voice presses in, relentless: “They will cheat you, hurt you, lie!”

Sméagol answers with a childlike insistence that sounds almost like prayer: “Master’s my friend.”

Gollum’s reply lands like a boot on something small. “You don’t have any friends. Nobody likes you.”

Sméagol recoils from his own thoughts, hands flying to his ears, rocking in place: “Not listening. Not listening.”

The cruelty continues anyway, voice sawing back and forth with practiced certainty: “You’re a liar, and a thief.”

Sméagol’s protest is thin—barely there. “No.”

Gollum spits the word that stains everything: “Murderer!”

Sméagol’s face crumples. Tears cut tracks through grime. “Go away.”

Gollum laughs—quick, bitter, triumphant—then leans in with the old, possessive boast of survival: the insistence that without him, there is nothing. Sméagol shakes, trembling between shame and anger, and something stubborn—something almost brave—rises up through the whimpering.

“Not anymore.”

Gollum freezes on that, startled into stillness, as if the mountain air itself has changed. Sméagol gathers the courage of repetition, the way small creatures drive off larger ones: “Leave now and never come back.”

Gollum snarls. Sméagol says it again—louder, shaking but unbroken: “Leave now and never come back!”

Again. Again. Each time the words strike like a stone thrown at a shadow until the shadow finally gives ground.

And then—suddenly—there is only one set of eyes in the dark.

Sméagol pants, blinking, searching for the presence that has haunted every breath. Realization arrives like sunlight through a crack. His shoulders lift. His mouth splits into a giddy, disbelieving grin. The joy looks too sharp for his ruined face, but it is joy all the same.

“We told him to go away! And away he goes… Gone, gone, gone—Sméagol is free!”
