Guided by the struggle against forgetting, against war, hatred, and fascism, Italian musician Davide Borghi (Albireon) and German multi-instrumentalist Mika Wilhelmson (Skadis Odem, Mondwinde) joined forces to found the project Brothers Of A Long Forgotten Winter. Their joint album “Remove The Splinters Of The Troll’s Mirror” is a haunting work about memory, humanity, and reconciliation – a musical appeal against amnesia and the resurgence of old hostilities.
The title refers to Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen” – a fairy tale in which shards of a bewitched mirror freeze people’s hearts and distort their vision. The musicians apply this metaphor to our own times: to a world that has grown accustomed to war, where the cold has long since returned. “Our music is meant to help remove those splinters – to bring warmth where people have turned cold,” says Mika Wilhelmson.
Davide and Mika first met in 2022, when Mika was asked to fill in for Davide at a festival on short notice. From this chance encounter grew a friendship and, eventually, a musical alliance. Without ever meeting in person during the entire production, they recorded the album in their respective home studios, exchanging tracks and ideas digitally. The result is a work that weaves together closeness and distance, hope and pain, past and present.
Musically, “Remove The Splinters Of The Troll’s Mirror” moves between folk, dark acoustic, and atmospheric melancholy. The lyrics are anti-war, socially critical, and deeply humanistic – inspired by lived remembrance and personal experience. Songs like “Fires Of Rome” and “Brothers” explore guilt, forgiveness, and solidarity across borders, while pieces such as “Valentina’s Song” and “Splinters” infuse the album with poetic tenderness.
“Remove The Splinters Of The Troll’s Mirror” invites us to remember, to forgive, and to feel. In a time when wars are once again drawing near and empathy has become rare, it reminds us that music can melt the splinters of coldness within us.
