Dr. Shabir Ally addresses a critique of Quran 19:7, where God tells Prophet Zakariya (Zechariah) that his son will be named Yahya (John), “a name not given to anyone before.” Critics argue this is historically inaccurate since similar names existed before. Dr. Shabir explains that different translations of the verse suggest varying meanings -- either that no one previously had the name, that no one was given the name directly by God, or that no one had the same distinction or characteristics. The Arabic phrase used is ambiguous and allows for all these interpretations. He points out that a similar construction appears in another verse referring to God, meaning “no equal,” which supports the idea that the verse about Yahya refers to his uniqueness in status or character, not necessarily the novelty of the name. Additionally, etymological studies show Yahya is linguistically distinct from the biblical Yohanna, though they refer to the same figure. Thus, when understood contextually and linguistically, the verse poses no contradiction or historical inaccuracy.
