My Niece Thought I'd Leave Her Everything — Until She Read The Conditions In My Will
The attorney's office smelled of old leather and older money, and my niece sat across the mahogany table with the patient smile of someone who had already spent her inheritance twice over. I watched her from the doorway for a moment before she noticed me, saw the way her fingers drummed lightly against her designer handbag, the way her eyes kept drifting to the stack of documents near the attorney's elbow. She looked like a woman waiting for a delayed flight to finally board, mildly inconvenienced but certain of her destination.
When she saw me standing there, very much alive, her face performed a remarkable sequence of emotions. Confusion first, then something that flickered too quickly to name, then a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes.
"Uncle Martin," she said. "I thought this was a reading."
"It is," I said, taking my seat at the head of the table. "But I've decided to do the reading myself."
That was three months ago. What happened after would test everything I believed about family, about obligation, about the difference between love that is earned and love that is simply expected. But to understand how we arrived at that mahogany table, I need to go back further, to trace the fault lines that had been forming for years beneath the surface of birthday dinners and holiday gatherings.
