The Mills Brothers are one of the very reasons that Doo-Wop Exist, and they were a very popular four person band from the late 1920s to the Early 1980s. They only used a guitar, but were able to mimic any brass and woodwind instrument with their hands and mouths. But they only had hits in the 1930s to the 1950s.
The band had their first appearance on Parlophone in 1929, but this was short lived by them getting on Brunswick in 1931 with Bing Crosby, but then got their first record by themselves following this later that year. Brunswick didn't know what to call them, because of their unique abilities. so they would put it as one of two things, either "'Four Boys And A Guitar." or "No Mechanical Devices or Instruments were used in the making of the record except one Guitar." They stayed on Brunswick mainly until 1934, until they switched to Decca. But they would just record mainly off of both labels until around 1940 when they would start recording almost exclusively for Decca. (Note: Around this time, a lot of their releases started getting re-released on Decca in the U.K with one their songs on one side, and The Andrews Sisters/ Louie Armstrong/The Ink Spots.) Around 1945, they started getting records on V-Disc. But with the end of the war, V-Disc stopped having them make records, son Decca picked them back up. They would stay with Decca until 1957 when they would switch to Dot Records. They would stay with them throughout 1970. From then on, they would have a short recording time on Paramount lasting until 1972. 1974 came along and they signed onto Ranwood for their their last series of records on a single label. They would record around on other labels, not really sticking to one label until 1982.
They had Many hits, some of which I'll List here. Till Then in 1944, Paper Doll in 1943, Someday in 1949, Daddy's Little Girl in 1950, I Heard in 1932, Sleepy Head in 1934, Opus One in 1955, Queen Of The Senior Prom in 1957, Lazy River in 1942, Twice As Much in 1953 and many more.
