In this lecture, we examine the origins of orbital mechanics, starting from Aristarchus in 600BC and progressing through Ptolemy in 100AD. We focus on how models of planetary motion arose with and drove the development of technology, including mathematics, geometry, and even machine learning (if we interpret epicycles and deferents as function fitting).
