This video shows how to remove a Flo-Master XP2 Impeller, rusted frozen to the motor shaft, without any specialized tools. I also show some preventative maintenance to keep it from happening again.
More than likely if your impeller is stuck on the shaft, it is rusted fast and cracked. So your probably going to need a new impeller about $29 to $35 depending on the HP of your motor and buy new pump seal kit for about $12 (links are down below). These items are almost twice the price in your local pool supply but they should have them in stock because this is a very common problem.
Get a sturdy rope (about a 1/4 inch in diameter or more) that doesn’t stretch and wrap at least 2 wraps crossing over when you first start to wrap it so it will tighten itself and not slide off when you go to crank on the motor shaft clockwise. The impeller will spin off counter-clockwise. On the first motor I pulled apart, you can see all of the pieces of the impeller on the towel in the video.
My friend and I had to hold the motor from moving. I applied almost all my strength to break the impeller free. If the plastic shaft of the impeller breaks off and stays on the motor shaft like mine did on the first impeller, you’ll have to pick out the ceramic seal and plastic shaft pieces with a pick tool or small screwdriver.
Once out, take the impeller housing off of the motor removing the 4 long bolts that hold it to the motor. Now the you have access to the whole shaft, take a wire wheel or sandpaper to remove the rust from the shaft. When done, put everything back together.
This problem is a defect the manufacture could eliminate by putting a seal on the shaft to keep water out. So, in this video, I use some Permatex silicon (link down below) to seal the motor shaft to the impeller shaft to keep moisture out, so it won’t rust and happen again. This seal alone should greatly extend the life of the pump.
