This is the first part of an edited lecture recently undertaken at the Australian National Maritime Museum covering the exploits and fates of some Australian Liners in the two world wars. This part looks at the history and wartime careers of two sister ships in the First World War; P&O Branch Lines Ballarat and Benalla.
The historical photos of Ballarat, Benalla, Borda & Torilla all come from the impressive Allan C Green collection held by the State Library of Victoria.
The historical photos of the Ballarat sinking were sourced from the Australian War Memorial: FL 16741704.
The remarkable photo of troops lined up on the deck of the sinking Ballarat is courtesy of the Imperial War Museum.
