I just bought a Sony a6000 as my new camera for YouTube. The a6000 is a mirrorless digital camera released in 2014 with a 24.3MP CMOS sensor. After using it for a weekend, it's a great and compact camera for videos and photos. However, I will be upgrading to an a6300 due to a few issues with the a6000. I will probably end up doing a review on the a6300 when I get one.
For these clips, I used the normal kit lens (16-50mm) and recorded in the AVCHD mode, which is H.264 video and Dolby Digital AC-3 audio. Almost all of the footage here was recorded at auto mode instead of manual.
I had some problems editing these AVCHD clips as the 2020 version of Premiere or newer will not decode the Dolby audio. This is because Adobe removed support for the Dolby codecs in the 2020 version which is stupid.
Using the CC 2019 version I can import the audio and it works fine, using a plugin that decodes the audio. In this case though I used Media Encoder CC 2019 to convert the audio to AAC and then edited and exported this video using Premiere 2022.
I'm upgrading to the a6300 because I found out that the a6000 does not have a microphone jack. It technically does, but it's a proprietary multi-connector on the hotshoe, and not a 3.5mm jack. Even worse, there is no manual level control for audio. These two issues are why I am upgrading. The A6000 is a great camera for photography and takes great video, but the audio is crippled by these issues.
