• For Shia Muslims, Ghadir Khumm is the divine designation of Ali ibn Abi Talib as Muhammad's spiritual and political successor, signifying his authority (walaya) and completing the message of Islam. They connect this event to Qur'anic verses like the Verse of Tabligh (Qur'an 5:67), which commanded Muhammad to convey a crucial message he feared to deliver, and the Verse of Ikmal al-Din (Qur'an 5:3), which announced the "perfection of religion" after Ali's appointment. Sunnis question why the majority of companions would have seemingly ignored a clear appointment of Ali, suggesting the community did not act as if such a designation had been made.
