Capybaras are the world's largest rodents. Adult capybaras can grow to 134 cm (4.40 ft) in length, stand 62 cm (24 in) tall at the shoulder. They can weigh up to 66 kg (146 lbs). They are closely related to the Guinea pig.
They are also recognized as one of the most adorable animals in the world. Their cute faces and laid-back personalities make them a joy to observe in the wild.
This capybara family was found in the Pantanal, Brazil's floodplains, the largest and most significant floodplains in the world. They lounged and grazed happily at the side of the water and then made their way into the swamp vegetation. The Pantanal is also home to caiman, members of the crocodile family. Caiman prey on young capybara, but the healthy adults are too large to be taken down in most cases. Jaguars also prey on capybara here.
Capybara are able to defend themselves with their large teeth, but they prefer to make their way into water so that it is harder for a predator to ambush them. The young stick very close to the adults for protection.
Social animals, capybara prefer to live in groups of 10-20. During the dry season, their group numbers may increase to as many as 100 individuals.
