The Boeing B-29 Superfortress was the most advanced bomber of World War II. Capable of carrying up to 20,000 pounds of bombs, far exceeding the bomb load of the smaller B-17 and B-24, the B-29 could fly higher, farther, and faster than any other bomber in the world. When the U.S. Army Air Corps awarded the first contract to Boeing in 1941, the B-29 went from the drawing board to a flying prototype in 16 months, to the first production model in 9 months, and just 11 months later, B-29s were dropping bombs on Japan. By the time the Japanese surrendered in August of 1945, over 1,000 B-29s were operating against Japan from their bases in the Mariana Islands.
