Panjab University, once hailed as the "Oxford of North India," is caught in a deep governance and identity crisis in 2025. Students, faculty, and alumni have taken to the streets, protesting against a controversial central government notification that drastically altered the university's democratic governance system.
Founded in 1882 in Lahore and re-established in Chandigarh post-Partition, Panjab University has been a premier institution, producing prominent leaders and thinkers like Dr. Manmohan Singh, Kalpana Chawla, and Romila Thapar. However, this legacy is under threat.
The unrest began after the university implemented an affidavit policy restricting students’ rights to protest on campus. Tensions escalated on October 28 when the Centre issued a notification centralizing power over the university's elected Senate and Syndicate bodies, reducing elected representation and increasing nomination by government officials. This move was seen by students as an erosion of university autonomy and a suppression of their voice.
Despite the central government putting the notification on hold on November 5, protests intensified, fueled by demands for the full withdrawal of the notification, restoration of Senate elections, cancellation of disciplinary cases against protesters, and reactivation of the Student Council.
The issue has sparked political controversy involving Punjab and Haryana governments, turning this student agitation into a broader battle over state rights and educational autonomy. Support from political leaders and farmer organizations has added momentum to the movement, which continues to be a powerful symbol of democratic resistance.
The Panjab University protests of 2025 are therefore more than a campus dispute, they represent a struggle to preserve democratic governance, student rights, and regional autonomy in the face of centralizing forces.
