Indian Roller is a pretty bird, belonging to the roller family of birds. Known by the name of 'Blue Jay' in former times. The brilliance of the colour and beauty of the Indian Roller is captivating in every way.
Along with the name Blue Jay', Indian Roller is also called as 'Palapitta', or 'NeelaKantha', meaning, blue throat, a name associated with the deity 'Shiva', who drank poison resulting in the blue throat.
This is a state bird of five Indian states, namely, Telangana, Andhra, Karnataka, Odisha and Bihar.
The Indian Roller is dominantly found in the continent of South Asia and certain parts of West Asia. As suggested by its name, it is obviously found in the country of India. The Lakshdweep, Maldive islands, and Srilanka are also areas inhabited by the Indian Roller. This bird is also found further West in countries like Iraq and Saudi Arabia.
Indian Roller is a fairly medium sized stocky bird, the size of 25 to 35cm and weigh between 70 to 100grms. Male and female appear to the same. The crown and vent are blue, breast is brownish, eyes and bill are black and strong. It has a large head and short neck. Its crown, lower wings and tail are blue green in colour. The throat and upper breast are purple. Back and abdomen are grey. The primaries are deep purplish blue and the tail is sky blue and central feathers are dull green in colour.
Indian Roller generally found in cultivation thin forest and grass land, open ground, local parks. They are also spotted in urban areas. Often seen perched on prominent bare trees or wires.
Indian Rollers are prey birds. They capture and feed upon their prey by descending to the ground. They eat all kinds of insects, reptiles, moths and even frogs, crickets, grasshoppers, butterflies and wasps also includes in their diet. They are friends of farmers, as these birds are known to help in pest control by feeding on insects, small reptiels and amphibians.
The Indian Roller is significant for its aerobatic display, that has earned the bird its name 'Blue Jay'. Whilst in a perched position, the Indian roller performs displays like wing dropping, bowing and tail fanning.
These birds prefer to build their nests in tree hole or cavities of tall buildings.
The call of the Indian roller is a harsh crow-like chack sound. It also makes a variety of other sounds, including metallic boink calls. It is especially vociferous during the breeding season.
The breeding season begins in the early summers just after spring. April is the month when the bird lays eggs in tree holes. Normal clutch consists of 3-5 eggs. Incubation period is 20days. Both male and female takes part in incubation. The young birds begin to acquire their flight feathers after approximately 35 days.
