Omaha beach is one of the most iconic battles in American history. Immortalised by the film Saving Private Ryan the image of brave men storming the beach under withering machine gun fire is seared into peoples minds. But why were casualties so much higher at Omaha than the other 4 beaches? Nature, veteran German troops and American failures all played their part.
