US President Donald Trump unveiled a new class of heavily armed US warships that will carry his name, a distinction usually reserved for former presidents. Trump said two Trump-class vessels will be built initially and described them as among the most lethal surface combat ships ever designed. He also boasted that the United States is “15 to 20 years ahead” of any rival in submarine technology, saying neither China nor Russia “can come close.”
US Navy Secretary John Phelan compared the new ships to the USS Iowa, the lead battleship of World War II, noting they are expected to be significantly lighter while equipped with advanced systems including hypersonic missiles, nuclear-capable cruise missiles, rail guns and high-powered lasers. The announcement comes as the administration elevates shipbuilding to a White House priority, signalling a broader push to expand US naval capacity.
