Winfried Denk on a Connectome of the Whole Mouse Brain
The Research Institute of Molecular Pathology Vienna (IMP) presents the lecture "Towards a Connectome of the Whole Mouse Brain" by physicist Winfried Denk. Winfried Denk is director of the Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology in Martinsried, close to Munich, and was pioneering two-photon microscopy for imaging live cells deep in highly scattering tissues. With this technology, he could generate three-dimensional images of nerve tissue and follow the activity of neurons in the intact brain. To understand how such neuronal activity patterns emerge from the underlying neuronal network architecture, he uses advanced electron microscopy and crowd-sourced annotation to trace neuronal connectivity in blocs of brain tissue. His talk is part of the IMP's Max Birnstiel Lecture Series 2017 and addresses the challenges in scaling up these technologies to create a complete wiring diagram – the connectome - of a mouse's brain.
