Why America Is So Much More Religious Than Europe

Unsurprisingly, America and Europe, being the big two sides of what we loosely refer to as “the west”, have a lot in common with each other. But there’s one way in which both they differ beyond belief: religion.

America is remarkably more religious than Europe by an immediately noticeable degree, with Christianity having a presence across practically all aspects of American life. The same cannot be said in Europe, wherein Christianity, in so much as it is still viewed at all, is done so through a historical lens of heritage, and little more.

..But why? Is there something about America that specifically makes the place unusually more religious? Is there something about modern Europe that specifically makes the place less religious? Or perhaps, are both of these questions of relevance at the same time?

In this lecture, I aim to make the clear case that America is in fact far more religious than Europe, then use economics to explain why I believe such differences exist, and finally ponder some lessons that we can all learn from such that will break us out of our national and theological bubbles to ultimately improve how we communicate with each other.
