The third generation Lexus GX, which is a luxury mid-size SUV, sits on Toyota’s GA-F platform, which is a body-on-frame modular construction shared with trucks like the Tacoma, Tundra, or the 4Runner and the Land Cruiser SUVs.

It features a double wishbone front suspension and live rear axle coil setup in the back. The base models get regular, passive dampers, and the higher trims get adaptive suspension. We also can get disconnecting sway bars for better off-road capability.

We only have one engine option at the moment - a 3.4L twin-turbo V6 that delivers 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. Other markets also get a 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain from the Land Cruiser, which should come to the U.S. at some point in the near future.

10-speed automatic transmission with a 2-speed transfer case is standard, as is a full-time 4 wheel drive system with a limited slip, locking center diff. You can tow up to 9,000 lbs with the GX, depending on the trim.

The new GX starts at around $65,000 for the entry Premium model, Luxury models start at around $78,000 and the off-road oriented Overtrail starts at $73,000. Our tester is a fully loaded Luxury+ and costs around $85,000.
