2008 Ford F-250 6.4L Diesel
Ford made an oil filter housing where you had to install a Ford filter so that you could put the cap back on. The interlock prevents replacing the cap without a filter. Unfortunately, it appears that that part of the design is patented, so other filter manufacturers need an adapter and can't integrate the interlock into the filter. Their work-around is to include a separate plastic piece to disable the interlock. This has the side-effect of allowing the cap to be replaced without a filter.
My suggestion to Ford is that they license the patent for free so that the interlock isn't bypassed.
