Amy was initially diagnosed with scoliosis when she was only 12 after a teacher noticed she had uneven shoulders. Her curve then was at 38 degrees, and she was prescribed a compressive brace to hold her curve in place. She was in a brace 23 hours per day. It was painful and uncomfortable for her to be a teenager and have to go through this. It also made it hard for her to do normal things and have usual teenager fun. This bracing was a full-time commitment.
After eight months of wearing the brace, Amy decided to stop because it wasn't really preventing her curve from growing and her outlook then was to get surgery at some point in the future.
Traditional bracing is not meant to correct scoliosis, just to prevent it from progressing and holding the spine in place. When patients use traditional braces and are taken off the brace, often their curves return to what they were or end up progressing as far as they were going to progress originally.
It is likely that Amy wasn't weaned properly off her brace and was told to wait until she was at a surgical level on her scoliosis. Amy's scoliosis wasn't managed properly, which caused her curve to reach over 60 degrees and all the other side effects that come with this degree of curve.
When it comes to braces, what matters most is the fit and the person that puts it together, making sure each brace is properly modified for each person. In Amy's case, she had a corrective style brace that wasn't doing what it was supposed to until Dr. Tony Nalda adjusted it for her. However, it is important to mention that not all braces are as malleable and easy to modify as Amy's.
When coming to see Dr. Nalda, Amy's curve was at 66 degrees; since then, her curve has reduced by 15 degrees. She has also seen improvement in her pain levels, especially her knee and hip pain.
In the adult stages of scoliosis, curves become stiffer, and it is more difficult for braces to do their work in correcting a rigid spine. The intensive program at the Scoliosis Reduction Center and the at-home therapy, exercises, and rehab, when combined, change the spine enough so that patients have less pain and which allows them to wear their braces better and for longer times.
After seeing a reduction, patients must work to stabilize their curve for long-lasting results.
