This is a review and teardown of the Gophert NPS-1601 bench power supply, the successor of the CPS-3205. They’ve clearly improved the design and build quality so this is probably the best adjustable power supply you can get in this price range.

Looking at the measurements I did we also notice the general specs of Gophert NPS-1601 power supply improved over the older CPS3205, the unit now has lower output noise and better current measurement accuracy. The teardown reveals they have made some changes to the internals of this power supply, build quality has definitely improved in the NPS-1601.

Overall I would say Gophert has massively improved the quality of their assembly process, the NPS1601 looks really nice inside but there are still some things I wish they would address like an easy user replaceable fuse and heat shrinking the mains wiring. Also I think it wouldn’t hurt them to add some insulation on the bottom of the PCB because it’s sitting just millimetres away from the metallic enclosure. A sheet of insulation material shouldn’t cost that much and it would improve the safety of this NPS-1601 power supply.
