西条八十の詩の一節を思い出し、森村誠一の小説「人間の証明」の舞台、夏の霧積温泉へ。
横川駅で碓氷峠、軽井沢までの鉄道に想い馳せ、碓氷峠鉄道文化むら 伝説の越後屋食堂、日本最古の駅弁屋「峠の釜めし」碓氷湖で昼飯、秘境 霧積温泉 金湯館へ向かう。

"Mother, what happened to my hat, I wonder?"
Recalled by this famous line from Saijo Yaso's poem, I head to Kirizumi Onsen in the summer, the setting of Seiichi Morimura’s novel Proof of the Man.
At Yokokawa Station, I reflect on the historic railway that once connected Usui Pass to Karuizawa. Along the way, I visit the Usui Pass Railway Heritage Park, stop by the legendary Echigoya Shokudo, and have lunch at Usui Lake, grabbing a meal from Japan’s oldest ekiben shop, Toge no Kamameshi. Then, I head to the Kintokan, a hidden retreat in Kirizumi Onsen.
