Anna Atkins is one of natural history’s unsung heroes. A pioneering botanist and photographer, her Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions, published in 1843, is often described as the first book to be illustrated with photographic images. Join our librarian, Will Beharrell, as we examine the Linnean Society’s copy of this rare and beautiful book, and uncover the story of the remarkable woman who made it.

The Linnean Society works to inform, involve and inspire people of all ages about nature and its wider interactions through our collections, programmes and publications. Founded in 1788, the Society takes its name from the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus (1707–1778).
