The Musi River, a major tributary of the Krishna River, flows through the state of Telangana. While it's most well-known for passing through Hyderabad and dividing the old city from the new, it also has a significant presence in other districts, including Suryapet.
Musi River in Suryapet District
Musi Project: A key feature of the Musi River in this region is the Musi Project, which is a reservoir constructed across the river near Solipet village. While the project was initially in the Nalgonda district, the village is now part of the Suryapet district after the state's reorganization.
Purpose: The Musi Project was built in 1963 to provide irrigation facilities to thousands of acres of agricultural land in both Suryapet and Nalgonda districts. It was designed with a live storage capacity of 4.6 TMC (thousand million cubic feet).
Irrigation: The project has two canals, a Left Canal and a Right Canal, which irrigate agricultural land across several villages and mandals in the region.
Challenges: The project has faced challenges over the years, including the silting of canals, a decrease in storage capacity, and structural issues like cracks and leaks in the dam's gates. There have been calls from local farmers for the modernization and strengthening of the project to improve agricultural productivity.
Course of the River
Origin: The Musi River originates in the Ananthagiri Hills near Vikarabad.
Flow: It generally flows eastwards, passing through Hyderabad, where it is often severely polluted by sewage and industrial waste.
Downstream: Downstream of Hyderabad, the river has a network of diversion weirs, locally known as kathwas, for irrigation purposes.
Confluence: The Musi ultimately joins the Krishna River near Wazirabad in the Nalgonda district.
