The expression we’re looking at today is N’importe quoi

It can mean bullshit/rubbish, nonsense or whatever/I don’t mind or anything depending on the context.

Let’s look at some examples.

Example 1: Elle raconte n’importe quoi.
She’s talking bullshit/ rubbish.

Example 2: Son mari fera n’importe quoi pour elle.
Her husband will do anything for her.

Example 3: Parfois, les élèves font n’importe quoi en classe.
Sometimes, students/pupils do whatever they like in class.

Example 4: -Qu’est-ce que tu veux?
-N’importe quoi

-What do you want?
-Anything

Note that Peu importe is a variation of this expression and this means whatever or never mind.

In addition to that, questions words like ‘where’, ‘how’,’when’, ‘who’ can be used together with N’importe to have the following words:

N’importe où which means anywhere
N’importe comment which means anyhow
N’importe quand which means anytime or whenever
N’importe qui which means whoever
