Metal Gear Solid (1998)
Set in 2005, Metal Gear Solid follows Solid Snake, a former special forces operative, called out of retirement to infiltrate Shadow Moses Island, a remote nuclear disposal facility in Alaska. The island has been seized by the rogue special forces unit FOXHOUND, led by Liquid Snake, who threatens to launch a nuclear strike using the walking battle tank Metal Gear REX.

Snake’s mission is to rescue DARPA Chief Donald Anderson and ArmsTech President Kenneth Baker, both of whom hold launch codes. Along the way, he allies with Meryl Silverburgh, Colonel Campbell’s niece, and Hal “Otacon” Emmerich, the scientist who designed Metal Gear REX. He battles FOXHOUND’s elite members, including the gunslinger Revolver Ocelot, the psychic Psycho Mantis, the deadly sharpshooter Sniper Wolf, the masked behemoth Vulcan Raven, and the elusive Decoy Octopus.

As Snake uncovers the truth, he learns that Liquid is his twin brother, both of them clones of the legendary soldier Big Boss as part of the secret Les Enfants Terribles project. After a climactic battle, Liquid perishes due to the FoxDie virus, a bioweapon secretly implanted in Snake. However, Revolver Ocelot survives, taking REX’s data for mysterious benefactors, setting the stage for future conflicts.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001)
Set between 2007 and 2009, MGS2 is divided into two acts. The first follows Solid Snake and Otacon, now part of the anti-Metal Gear group Philanthropy, infiltrating a tanker transporting a new prototype, Metal Gear RAY. However, the mission is sabotaged by Russian mercenaries led by Sergei Gurlukovich and Revolver Ocelot, who betrays them, hijacks RAY, and disappears after revealing that his right arm has been replaced with Liquid Snake’s severed limb, which sometimes takes control of his mind.

The second act introduces Raiden, a young special forces operative sent to infiltrate the Big Shell, an offshore facility supposedly taken over by terrorists known as the Sons of Liberty, led by Solidus Snake, another clone of Big Boss and a former U.S. President. Raiden is guided by his commander Colonel AI and his girlfriend Rosemary, but as he fights through the facility, it becomes clear that everything is a lie.

Raiden faces off against the rogue military unit Dead Cell, including the immortal vampire Vamp, the fortune-manipulating Fortune, and the explosives expert Fatman. He also encounters the mysterious spy (a.k.a. Mr. X), later revealed to be Olga Gurlukovich, who aids him for unknown reasons.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004)
A prequel set in 1964 during the Cold War, MGS3 follows Naked Snake, a legendary soldier who would later become Big Boss. He is sent into the Soviet jungle to retrieve a Soviet scientist, Nikolai Sokolov, and destroy the powerful nuclear weapon known as the Shagohod. However, his mission is compromised when his mentor, The Boss, defects to the Soviet Union and hands over a miniature nuclear warhead to Colonel Volgin, a sadistic GRU officer who then launches it, framing the United States and escalating tensions between the superpowers.

One week later, Snake is sent back into Soviet territory in Operation Snake Eater to eliminate The Boss, destroy the Shagohod, and take down Volgin. He is assisted by Major Zero, Para-Medic, and Sigint over radio communications, while on the field, he allies with the mysterious spy EVA, who helps him navigate the dangerous jungle.

Snake faces Volgin’s elite Cobra Unit, a group of supernatural warriors representing different combat styles:

The Fear
The End
The Fury
The Sorrow

As Snake progresses, he discovers the truth: The Boss’s defection was a ruse—she was on a secret mission to retrieve Volgin’s stolen funds for the U.S. government. However, after defeating Volgin and destroying the Shagohod, Snake is forced into a heartbreaking final battle with The Boss. He defeats her, but in doing so, unknowingly completes her mission—dying as a traitor so the world could remain in balance.

The game ends with Snake being awarded the title Big Boss, but he rejects the honor, devastated by the truth. In a post-credits twist reveal the complex betrayals and power struggles that would shape the rest of the Metal Gear saga.
