The name given to the collection of mills that Cromford and Masson Mills is part of is Derwent Valley Mills, as the mills sit on the banks of the River Derwent. It is this collection of mills that have been given the incredible UNESCO Heritage status and this is due to it being recognised as the birthplace of the factory system, where the water-powered textile production revolutionised the Industrial Revolution. The Derwent Valley Mills wouldn’t exist without a few key pioneers. Richard Arkwright kick-started it all at Cromford, building the first water-powered cotton mill and changing how the world worked. Jedediah Strutt took things further in Belper, and the Evans family created a whole mill village at Darley Abbey. Even earlier, John Lombe was spinning silk by water power in Derby — way ahead of his time. These were the people who turned a quiet valley into the birthplace of the factory system.
This ambient video takes you through the historic surroundings of Masson Mills and Cromford Mills in the heart of Derbyshire’s Derwent Valley. Once central to the Industrial Revolution, these remarkable sites are now quiet, peaceful spaces full of atmosphere and history. With the sound of flowing water, soft footsteps, and natural ambience, this cinematic walk captures the character of the River Derwent, old mill buildings, and the tranquil landscape that surrounds them. Perfect for background viewing, relaxation, or anyone interested in the story of Britain’s industrial past.
